Extreme World – An Adventure in Africa

On May 10th, 2008, Pedal Joe initiated one of the greatest adventures of his life. In a small pedal go-cart he left the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and began a journey that is going to end in South Africa. Crossing part of Europe and most of Africa continent he intends to reach Johannesburg to see another World Cup.

In this 17,000 kilometers journey, he wants to give visibility to a Lions Club global campaign, which provides eye care in poor countries.

Pedal Joe is not a wealthy eccentric who lives traveling the world. Far from it, he always does his projects with little money. While traveling, he faces uncomfortable situations, such as; sleeping in tents, eating little, facing bad weather and even water rationing. However, his charisma and humility give him the ability to get help in the places he passes.

In this adventure, he didn’t get any sponsors. He is supported only by the Lions Club and a little help from a Dutch company which gave him the pedal go-kart.

At the end of this project, Zé will have visited 22 countries: France, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola, Namibia, Botswana and South Africa.

The trip will end on June 2010, at Nelson Mandela Square, in the South African capital. Joe wishes to stay until the end of the World Cup and wants to see all Brazil games and practices. He will be housed in a camp near the Brazilian Team concentration, but he doesn’t have any tickets for the games, nor a return ticket to Brazil.
